Hot Hojicha Latte (Printable)

Aromatic roasted green tea blended with creamy steamed milk and optional sweetener for a warming Japanese-inspired drink.

# Required Ingredients:

→ Tea

01 - 2 teaspoons hojicha powder (roasted green tea powder)
02 - 1/2 cup hot water (approximately 80°C or 175°F)

→ Milk

03 - 1 1/2 cups milk (dairy or plant-based)

→ Sweetener

04 - 1 to 2 teaspoons honey, maple syrup, or sugar (optional, to taste)

# Preparation Steps:

01 - Sift the hojicha powder in a small bowl to remove any lumps and ensure a smooth texture.
02 - Add hot water to the sifted hojicha powder and whisk vigorously using a bamboo whisk or regular whisk until fully dissolved and frothy.
03 - In a saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat until steaming but not boiling. Froth the milk using a milk frother or whisk until creamy and well-aerated.
04 - Pour the dissolved hojicha into two mugs, then add sweetener if desired and stir to combine thoroughly.
05 - Gently pour the steamed milk over the tea base while holding back the foam with a spoon, then spoon the reserved foam on top.
06 - Serve immediately, optionally garnished with a light sprinkle of hojicha powder.

# Expert Suggestions:

01 -
  • The roasted tea provides a cozy, nutty flavor that is incredibly soothing.
  • It takes only 10 minutes to prepare from start to finish.
  • It is a lower-caffeine alternative to coffee or traditional matcha lattes.
02 -
  • Always sift the hojicha powder to prevent clumping and ensure a silky texture.
  • Use a bamboo whisk (chasen) in a zig-zag motion for the most authentic and frothy tea base.
  • Froth the milk just until it becomes creamy; over-heating can alter the flavor of the milk.
