Caramelized Onion Apple Cheddar (Printable)

A gourmet grilled sandwich featuring caramelized onions, apple slices, and sharp cheddar on buttery bread.

# Required Ingredients:

→ Caramelized Onions

01 - 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
02 - 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
03 - 1 teaspoon olive oil
04 - 1/2 teaspoon salt
05 - 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)

→ Sandwich

06 - 4 slices sourdough or country bread
07 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for spreading)
08 - 1 medium crisp apple (e.g., Granny Smith), thinly sliced
09 - 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, sliced or shredded
10 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

# Preparation Steps:

01 - In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter with olive oil. Add sliced onion and salt. Cook, stirring frequently, for 15 to 18 minutes until deeply golden and soft. Optionally add sugar halfway through. Remove from heat and set aside.
02 - Arrange bread slices and spread butter on one side of each. On the unbuttered side, layer half the cheddar, caramelized onions, apple slices, a pinch of black pepper, and remaining cheddar. Top with second slice, buttered side out.
03 - Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium. Cook sandwiches 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing gently, until bread is golden and cheese melts. Lower heat if bread browns too quickly.
04 - Remove from heat. Allow to rest 1 to 2 minutes. Slice and serve warm.
